GitHub introduces default model enablement for Copilot Business and Enterprise

Unconfigured Copilot models will inherit GitHub's default enablement state after a 28-day administrator configuration window.

New stateUnconfigured models inherit GitHub's default enablement state. Explicit enabled or disabled settings remain preserved; open-weight models and models outside GitHub's data-retention agreement are excluded.

GitHub Copilot Business and Enterprise organisations managing model policies.

Action required

Administrators who require manual approval for every model must disable the default before 26 August 2026 and preserve explicit settings.

Evidence boundary

The policy does not guarantee that every model is available to every plan or client and excludes the named model categories.
